Plot summary
Henry Thomas is a rockabilly singer and guitarist who has just left prison after stabbing a man in a drunken brawl. His wife, Georgette, and their six-year-old daughter, Margaret Rose, travel from Tyler to Columbus, Texas, to find him, though he does not know they are coming. Kate Dawson, the unmarried woman who raised him after his parents died, wants him to stop singing, attend night school and find steady work. She tells him she can send him back to prison. Henry refuses and keeps playing music.
