Plot summary
In Arapahoe County, Wyoming, Josie Minick is a young woman whose abusive alcoholic husband falls to his death down the stairs when she opens a bedroom door. She stands trial over the death and is cleared. Her father-in-law gains custody of her small son and takes the boy to live with him in Cheyenne, so Josie stays in the county to build a life of her own as a rancher. She turns to sheep ranching on land north of the Wyoming deadline, which annoys the male cattle ranchers around her, and she organizes the local women into a campaign for the vote.
