Grant Withers

Biography

Grant Withers was an American film actor whose screen career lasted more than thirty years, beginning in the late silent era. Born in Pueblo, Colorado, he sold oil and wrote for newspapers before making his film debut in the comedy short So Long Bill (1926). A young leading man, he had top billing over James Cagney in Other Men's Women (1931) and played Shirley Temple's first on-screen parent in The Red-Haired Alibi (1932). His later roles were mainly supporting villains in B movies, serials, and television, though he starred in the Universal serials Jungle Jim and Radio Patrol (both 1937) and played police captain Bill Street in Monogram's five Mr. Wong films. Under contract to Republic Pictures from 1944 to 1954, he appeared in nine John Wayne films. His last film role was I Mobster (1959), part of some 200 film and television roles.
