Plot summary
Eastern schoolteacher Catherine Allen becomes notorious in 1906 when people learn she wrote a romance novel, and she decides to move west and start a new life. Jim Gardner, an oil man, approaches her on the train, so she asks cowboy Dan Somers to sit nearby. Dan and his friend Despirit Dean, a stagecoach driver, are bound for Oklahoma too. In Sapulpa, many townspeople resent how Jim does business, and one farmer says the payment he got for land where Jim struck oil was too small. Jim is furious when Dan speaks against Chief Big Tree selling Indian land cheaply.
