Plot summary
The town of Spurline depends on the Golden Empire, the ranch of Virgil Renchler, who effectively runs the place. One night, men in his employ beat Juan Martín, a young laborer, to death. Ben Sadler has just taken office as sheriff of Spurline, and he opens an investigation into the killing rather than let it pass. Renchler's henchmen work against him, and many in Spurline want the matter dropped, fearing the town cannot survive without the ranch's business. Skippy, Renchler's overprotected daughter, becomes an unlikely ally to the sheriff, and the two of them are put in danger as they seek justice.

- Robert Middleton was originally set to play rancher Virgil Renchler, but agents from the William Morris Agency suggested Orson Welles, who took the part because he badly needed $60,000 to pay back taxes; it was Welles' first Western role.
- While making the film, Orson Welles rewrote sections of the script and formed a relationship with Zugsmith, who produced Welles' next film as director, Touch of Evil (1958).
