Plot summary

A preacher who has lost his faith, a prospector whose diggings have failed and a thieving, sarcastic con man find themselves together at a rundown railroad station in the 1870s Southwest. The preacher and the prospector both sat through the trial of Juan Carrasco, a bandit who drew Colonel Wakefield, an aristocratic Southerner, with a tale of a lost Aztec treasure, then assaulted the colonel's wife Nina while the colonel lay bound and gagged. Carrasco was convicted and condemned for the stabbing of the colonel. Waiting at the station, the three men go over the accounts given in court. Each witness remembers the same events in sharply different ways, and new questions arise with every retelling.
