Plot summary
Beaudray Demerille makes his living as a gambler and cardsharp, drifting through the towns of 1950s Arizona. A card game leaves him with an unwanted prize, Wanda Nevada, a 13-year-old orphan who wants to sing at the Grand Ole Opry. She attaches herself to him and he cannot shake her. At a pool hall, aging prospector Texas Curly tells the patrons about a gold mine in the Grand Canyon and is laughed off as a drunk. Wanda picks up the pouch Curly drops, follows him outside, and sees Strap Pangburn and Ruby Muldoon, two crooks from the bar, pressing him about the mine. She runs and hides in Demerille's car. The pouch holds a map, and Demerille and Wanda set out for the canyon with the two crooks trailing them.

- Wanda Nevada was Peter Fonda's last feature film as a director, and the only film to feature him with his father, Henry Fonda, who cameoed as an Arizona prospector. Peter paid his father $1,000 for one day's work after Henry called to say he was out of work.
- United Artists dumped Wanda Nevada, and when Peter Fonda offered the studio six million dollars to sell the film back to him, it refused.
