Plot summary
Johnny Munroe is an engineer who travels to South America to drive a railroad tunnel through a mountain so that the mines on the far side can be reached. The work is financed by the wealthy industrialist Frederick Alexander, who insists the bore take a shorter way, one that is more dangerous to cut. Maura, Alexander's daughter, comes to care for Johnny, and he falls in love with her. The romance complicates the job, and Johnny's ethics are compromised as he tries to build the tunnel.
