Plot summary
John Devlin, a professional gambler, marries Sandy Poli, the daughter of railroad millionaire Marko Poli. The two flee her father's anger for Fargo in Dakota Territory, where Sandy believes a land boom will make their fortune, and she brings along twenty thousand dollars taken from her father. On the stagecoach west they share the ride with Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins, who hold Fargo and burn out farmers, blaming the Indians. Continuing north by riverboat, John and Sandy meet Captain Bounce. Two of Bender's men, Slagin and Carp, board the River Bird and take the twenty thousand dollars from John at gunpoint.
