Plot summary
Nick and Nora Charles reach San Francisco on New Year's Eve, home from New York. Nora's aristocratic family has asked them to dinner, where her cousin Selma Landis reports that Robert, her husband, has been gone for three days. Aunt Katherine Forrest, who thinks little of Nick, wants the matter settled quietly, and Dr. Kammer, a psychiatrist, keeps Selma under close watch. David Graham, once engaged to Selma, tells Nick that Robert offered to give her up for $25,000. Nick and Nora track Robert to the Lichee Club, a nightclub where he has taken up with Polly, the star performer. Polly and Dancer, who runs the club, mean to take David's money for themselves, and Polly's brother Phil has been pressing her for cash.
