Plot summary
Mark attends protest rallies at a Los Angeles campus and carries a gun. When a policeman is shot during a confrontation between students and police, Mark leaves the city and steals a small aircraft at a suburban airport, flying into the desert. Daria, an anthropology student, works for a property developer, Lee Allen, who is planning a resort in the desert; she drives toward Phoenix to meet him. On the way she hopes to find a Los Angeles man who looks after children with emotional troubles near a Mojave roadhouse. Mark spots her car from the air, buzzes it low and drops a shirt for her. They meet again at a desert shack, where he asks her for a lift to buy gasoline.

- Mark Frechette was discovered at a bus stop during a verbal confrontation with a man leaning out of a third-floor apartment window; Antonioni's casting director, Sally Dennison, witnessed the fight and recommended him to the director with the note, "He's twenty, and he hates."
- The United States Department of Justice investigated whether the film violated the Mann Act, which forbade taking women across state lines for sexual purposes; the FBI investigated it because of Antonioni's political views, and officials in Oakland accused him of staging a real riot for an early scene.
- Richard Wright of Pink Floyd wrote "The Violent Sequence" for the film, but Antonioni rejected it; Roger Waters recalled the director saying it was "too sad" and that it reminded him of church. It was later reworked into "Us and Them" for The Dark Side of the Moon.
- In 1973, along with three other members of the Fort Hill Community, Mark Frechette committed a bank robbery using a gun with no bullets. He died in prison, ostensibly in a weight-lifting accident.
- While in the United States for the 1966 premiere of Blowup, Antonioni read a short newspaper article about a young man who had stolen an aircraft and was killed when he tried to return it in Phoenix, Arizona.
- John Fahey was flown to Rome to record music for the film but it went unused, though a portion of his Dance of Death made the cut; Fahey and Antonioni came to blows after the director made anti-American remarks.
