Plot summary

In a rural district, Timothy Osborn and Martin Wrenn work as linemen for a utility, and both flirt with Mary Tucker, a dairy farmer's daughter. In 1917, America enters World War I and the two men join the U.S. Army, serving in the same unit, where Wrenn is a sergeant. Osborn goes to the front and is wounded by shellfire; the injury costs him the use of his legs, and he comes home in a wheelchair. Mary visits him every day and the two are drawn to each other, but his condition keeps him from telling her what he feels. Wrenn is home as well, and with money and guile he wins over Mary's mother, who presses her daughter toward him.

  • Frank Borzage had directed Janet Gaynor in 7th Heaven and Street Angel in the two years before Lucky Star, two of the three films for which she won the first Academy Award for Best Actress, the third being F. W. Murnau's Sunrise.
