Pat Hingle
Biography
Pat Hingle was an American actor known for playing tough blue-collar authority figures in more than 200 productions between 1954 and 2008. Born in Miami, he attended high school in Texas, began acting in college, and trained in New York before joining the Actors Studio in 1952. On Broadway he appeared in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, J.B., and That Championship Season, and earned a Tony Award nomination for Dark at the Top of the Stairs. His first film role was an uncredited part in On the Waterfront (1954), after which he became a familiar face as judges, police officers, and other officials. He played Sally Field's father in Norma Rae (1979) and Colonel Tom Parker in the television movie Elvis (1979). He worked with Clint Eastwood in films including Hang 'Em High (1968) and Sudden Impact (1983). His later credits included Brewster's Millions (1985) and Shaft (2000). He portrayed Commissioner Gordon in Batman (1989) and its three sequels.

First role
Hingle's first film role came in On the Waterfront, released in 1954, where he played the bartender Jock in an uncredited part.
A first
Hingle played Commissioner Gordon in Batman, which came out in 1989, and in its three sequels. He and Michael Gough were the only two actors in all four Batman films from 1989 to 1997.
Early training
Hingle started acting in college. After he graduated, he went to New York, where he trained at HB Studio and the American Theatre Wing. He joined the Actors Studio in 1952, and that opened the door to his first Broadway production, End as a Man.
Behind the camera
Hingle set up the Pat Hingle Guest Artist Endowment in November 2007, letting students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington work alongside visiting professional actors.
