Plot summary

Richard Beck is a veteran detective in Seattle who has little patience for the people who report sex crimes, holding that they invite what happens to them. After he frees an accused rapist in return for information about a murder suspect, he is sent to the Sex Crimes unit, where he works with the counselor Barbara McKee. He goes on treating that job as less serious than it is. Two male suspects then rape him, and the tables turn: he must confront the kind of system he belonged to, work to regain his status at his job, and see that the men are prosecuted.
