Joanne Woodward
Biography
Joanne Woodward is a retired American actress and director known for layered portrayals of complicated women. Born in Thomasville, Georgia, she trained at the Actors Studio and the Neighborhood Playhouse, then began on television in 1952. Her breakout came with The Three Faces of Eve (1957), playing a woman with dissociative identity disorder, which brought her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. She went on to appear in The Long, Hot Summer (1958), The Fugitive Kind (1960), Paris Blues (1961), A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966), Rachel, Rachel (1968), and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972). She earned further Oscar nominations for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams (1973) and Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1990). On television she won Emmys for See How She Runs (1978) and Do You Remember Love (1985). In the 1990s she directed off-Broadway, and from 2001 to 2005 she was artistic director at the Westport Country Playhouse.

Behind the award
Woodward sewed the dress she wore when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and she is the only winner of that award to date who has done so.
Getting ready for a role
Joanne Woodward took the title role in The Stripper, released in 1963. Burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee gave her coaching in technique for that part.
A role that slipped away
In 1974, Woodward was set to appear alongside Robert Shaw in Strindberg's The Dance of Death at Lincoln Center, but she left the production while it was still in rehearsals.
Early training
Woodward's training there included work at the Actors Studio, plus study with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
