Plot summary
In Vietnam, Bud Whitman helps clear villagers from land the war has declared unsafe and destroys their homes with explosives. He is injured in combat and sent home after surgery to Chinook Ranch, the family cattle ranch. His wife is Annie, his son is Rounder, and his father is Vern. Some years afterward the government begins proceedings to extend an Air Force base into the area. Connie Priest, the county surveyor, is hostile toward the Whitmans. Some families agree to sell their land to the government. The Whitmans refuse and go to court to keep the ranch.
