Biography

Michael Gough was a British actor whose film and television credits numbered more than 150. Born in Kuala Lumpur, he left agricultural college to join The Old Vic and made his film debut in Blanche Fury (1948). He played Arthur Holmwood in Dracula (1958) and became known for villainous parts in horror films such as Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), Konga (1961), The Phantom of the Opera (1962), Trog (1970) and Satan's Slave (1976). He spoofed his horror image in What a Carve Up! (1961). On television he played the Toymaker in Doctor Who and Dr. Armstrong in The Avengers. He won a British Academy Television Award in 1957 and a Tony in 1979 for Bedroom Farce. Later he played Alfred Pennyworth in Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), then retired after Sleepy Hollow (1999) but returned for Corpse Bride (2005) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

Gough appeared in the four Batman films of the Burton/Schumacher series, and Pat Hingle, who played Commissioner Gordon, was the other actor to do so.
A role that slipped away
Gough played the Toymaker in Doctor Who, and was set to return in The Nightmare Fair, a story planned for the 23rd season, but the season and the serial were canceled and never produced.
A change of course
Gough retired in 1999 following his role in Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Burton asked him to come back twice, and he provided the voice of Elder Gutknecht in Corpse Bride and the Dodo in Alice in Wonderland.
