Plot summary
Sam Brewster is the banker in a New Mexico town, and while Matt Weaver was away at war, Brewster sold Weaver's farm. Weaver comes home to find that Ruth, the woman he meant to marry, has married another man. Union sympathizers in town have turned against him, and only the Mexican residents, long his friends, help him. Brewster brings in Jules Gaspard d'Estaing, a gunfighter, to deal with him. Jules is a Creole, raised with a cultured background in English and French, and the townspeople call him Jewel. His stagecoach stops in town for a rest, and he stays on, taking notice of Ruth.
