Plot summary
Phoenix detective Ben Shockley is handed an errand by Commissioner Edgar Blakelock: bring a witness from Las Vegas for what he is told is a minor trial. The witness, Augustina "Gus" Mally, is a belligerent prostitute with mob ties, and she insists that the two of them are being set up. Shockley brushes off her warning until he learns that bookmakers around the city are offering odds on whether she survives to testify. The car arranged to pick them up is bombed, and after Shockley is blamed for a kidnapping and attempted murder, police fire on Mally's house. The pair force a county constable to drive them across the border into Arizona.

- The Gauntlet was first set up for Marlon Brando and Barbra Streisand. Brando pulled out and Steve McQueen took his place, but differences between McQueen and Streisand made both of them leave, which is how Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke ended up in the film.
- The house that is shot to pieces was a set built for $250,000, drilled with 7,000 holes so that explosive squibs could be loaded into it for the demolition.
- For the helicopter chase, the production built a helicopter with no engine in it so that it could be crashed.
- The bus that runs the final gauntlet was blasted with 8,000 squibs to simulate the hail of police gunfire. Of the film's $5.5 million budget, one million dollars went on the action sequences alone.
