Plot summary
Corporal Clint Keyes is under arrest for desertion and on his way to a fort in the charge of Sergeant Raines. The fort holds a captured boy whose mother, Blue Feather, urges him to get away; when soldiers catch him slipping out, they find he is white. Captain Stewart believes the boy's family died in a massacre of settlers, and Chaplain John Kaplan adopts him and baptizes him as Mark. Mark escapes again, and in the desert Clint, who has fled with two camels named Rosie and Thirsty, shoots him by accident. Clint binds the wound and keeps the boy with him until the mountains, while Raines and his patrol follow.
