Plot summary
Roy Cohn, the lawyer and power broker, is dying of AIDS in a Bethesda, Maryland hospital room, where his many enemies appear to him in hallucinations. His life returns in flashbacks, from childhood to the years when he served as Joseph McCarthy's chief counsel on Senate hearings about communist activity in the United States. He builds influence with men such as J. Edgar Hoover, his onetime mentor, using intimidating tactics. Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Rosenberg are among those who appear to him. The story also turns on his closeted homosexuality and on how much blame he carries for the McCarthy era.
