Plot summary
Dr. Peter Carey joins a Boston hospital as its new pathologist, makes friends with the doctors around him and begins a romance with Georgia Hightower, who works there as a dietitian. The surgeon J.D. Randall runs the place, and the police are investigating morphine that has been going missing from the hospital. Karen Randall, the surgeon's daughter, dies in the emergency room one night after an abortion. Dr. David Tao is arrested for carrying it out. Carey visits him in jail by pretending to be his lawyer. Tao tells him he has charged $25 for illegal abortions, sickened by the harm amateurs did to women, but says Karen's procedure was not his work. Captain Pearson tells Carey to stay out of it.
