Plot summary
Ruth Anne, called Bone, is born out of wedlock to Anney and grows up in the 1950s in a poor part of Greenville, South Carolina, surrounded by aunts Ruth, Raylene and Alma, uncles Earle, Wade and Travis, and Granny. Anney works hard, is needy for attention, and the illegitimate stamp on Bone's birth certificate shames them both until the county courthouse burns down and no copy survives. Anney's first husband, a kind and hardworking man named Lyle Parsons, dies in a car accident, leaving a daughter who is Bone's half-sister. Anney then marries Glen Waddell, who seems attentive at first, and she sees him as her last chance.
