Plot summary
Ten years after Jennifer Spencer and her sister Beth were attacked by a group of men, an assault that left Beth in a catatonic state, Jennifer shoots one of them and heads for her hometown of San Paulo to track down the rest. Inspector Harry Callahan, meanwhile, keeps angering the officials above him; after he provokes crime lord Threlkis into a fatal heart attack, they order him to take a vacation instead of firing him. Four of Threlkis' hitmen then come after him; he takes down three and the last one escapes. His superiors send him to San Paulo to keep him out of sight while the uproar fades. There he chases down a robber, which angers the local police, and Chief Lester Jannings, who wants him gone, refuses to work with him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sudden Impact (1983)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The script began as a separate vehicle for Sondra Locke, written by Charles B. Pierce and Earl E. Smith, and was only later adapted into a Dirty Harry film by Joseph Stinson.
- Clint Eastwood's deal at this point in his career gave him 60 percent of all the film's profits, leaving 40 percent for the studio, and estimates put his earnings from Sudden Impact at $30 million.
- The chase after a bank robber through San Francisco's downtown business district preserves a rare view of streets that the Loma Prieta earthquake would devastate on 17 October 1989.
- With $67.6 million in the United States and Canada it became the highest grossing of the five Dirty Harry films, and it passed the $63.6 million of Thunderball to become the highest-grossing fourth instalment of any film series there.
- Harry Callahan's line "Go ahead, make my day" outgrew the film. President Ronald Reagan used it in a March 1985 speech threatening to veto a tax rise, and Eastwood campaigned for mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1986 on bumper stickers reading "Go Ahead - Make Me Mayor".
