Plot summary
Gotham City has new trouble. Mr. Freeze leaves a trail of diamond thefts, and the stones power the sub-zero suit that keeps him alive at ordinary temperatures. He was Victor Fries, a scientist, before a laboratory accident changed him, and he intends to ice over Gotham until he can fund the rest of a cure for MacGregor's syndrome, the illness that afflicts his wife, Nora. In Brazil, botanist Pamela Isley works under Jason Woodrue, who has turned her plant research into a super soldier serum called Venom. Toxins transform her into Poison Ivy, and she leaves for Gotham with Bane. Bruce Wayne rejects her proposal for a greener city. Batman and Robin go after both villains, and Alfred's niece, Barbara Wilson, arrives at Wayne Manor.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to shave his head, so he wore a bald cap, and the blue LED he held in his mouth had to be wrapped in balloons after battery acid started leaking into his mouth.
- Before the script was rewritten around Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, and reportedly Patrick Stewart had all been considered to play Mr. Freeze.
- Filming was halted after Mr. Freeze's blaster prop went missing from the set, triggering a police investigation that ended with a raid on a film memorabilia collector's home.
- When Val Kilmer decided not to return as Batman, director Joel Schumacher considered casting William Baldwin in the role before ultimately choosing George Clooney.
- Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, and Julia Roberts were all in the running to play Poison Ivy before the role went to Uma Thurman.
- Mr. Freeze's armor was made by armorer Terry English, who estimated that the costume alone cost some $1.5 million to develop and make.
