Plot summary
Real estate agent Clifford Sanders persuades skeptical journalist John Baxter to buy the notorious house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, at a fraction of its value. John moves in to write his first novel and to prove the place's reputation is nonsense; earlier, with his partner Melanie, he had exposed a pair of con artists working in the same rooms. Preparing the house, Clifford hears footsteps in the attic and is locked in. Melanie photographs Clifford, and the pictures she develops do not match what she saw. John nearly dies in a malfunctioning elevator at work, and he will not listen when Melanie insists something is in the house.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The real George and Kathy Lutz, whose claims of supernatural events were the basis for the book The Amityville Horror and its 1979 film, sued Orion Pictures, which is why Amityville 3-D was not initially billed as a sequel and never mentions the name Lutz.
- Screenwriter David Ambrose wrote the film under the pseudonym William Wales, and the character of John Baxter was based on Stephen Kaplan, a paranormal investigator who was attempting to disprove the Lutz story as a hoax.
- Amityville 3-D was one of a spate of 3D films released in the early 1980s, and it was the only Orion Pictures film ever shot in the format.
