Plot summary
Peter Hoskins is a self-conscious, conservative worker at a Chicago publishing house. At a party he meets Rita Boyle, who tends bar part time and hopes to work as a graphic designer. The two become a couple, and being with her gives Peter more confidence and optimism. Rita admits that her free and easy manner covers pessimism: she is afraid that if she invests too much joy in life, things will go wrong and people will be cruel. She will not have children, since she considers the world unjust. Minutes after the vows on their wedding day, an elderly man, Julius Blier, asks to kiss the bride, and Rita, charmed, agrees.
