Plot summary
A young physician, Robert Merivel, wins a place at the court of King Charles II after he saves the King's favorite spaniel. The position brings him wealth and standing. The King then arranges his marriage to Celia, a mistress who has lost the King's favor; the match is meant to keep Barbara Castlemaine, the King's favorite mistress, from suspecting that the King still wants Celia. Merivel is given Bidnold, an estate in Suffolk, while Celia lives in a house at Kew that the King can visit. Will Gates, the estate manager, helps Merivel bring Bidnold back to its former state. The King sets one condition: Merivel must not fall in love with his wife.
