Plot summary
In 1977, at the end of their college years, Harry Burns and Sally Albright travel together from Chicago to New York City, where Sally is headed to journalism school and Harry to a job. Amanda Reese, a friend of Sally's, is the woman Harry is seeing. On the road the two argue about relationships: Harry holds that desire always gets in the way of friendship between a man and a woman, and Sally disagrees. He tells her she is attractive, she takes it as a pass, and they part in New York expecting never to meet again. Five years later the two turn up on the same flight. Sally is dating Joe, who is Harry's neighbor, and Harry is engaged to a lawyer, Helen. Harry proposes that they try being friends.
