Plot summary

Dexter Cornell teaches English at a college, a writer who made his name years ago and has played it safe since. He helps his friend Hal Petersham with a first book. Then a student, Nick Lang, falls from the building to his death, and Dex, drinking heavily while his marriage to Gail falls apart, meets an admiring student, Sydney Fuller, in a bar. The next morning a campus clinic finds poison in him and gives him a day or two to live. At Gail's house Dex sees an unknown figure kill her, and the police, who believe Nick was pushed, take him for the killer. He escapes and, with Sydney's help, sets out to find who poisoned him.
