Plot summary
Alice Green drinks heavily. Her husband Michael is an airline pilot, and they have two daughters, Jess, who is nine and from Alice's earlier marriage, and Casey, who is four. Alice is loving and playful with the girls, but drunk she is careless with them. One afternoon she comes home incoherent and sends the babysitter Amy away, then slaps Jess when the girl questions her. In the shower she loses her balance, falls through the glass door and lies unconscious; Jess, frightened, calls Michael, who flies home. At the hospital the two of them confront what her drinking is doing to the family, and Alice enters a rehabilitation clinic, leaving Michael to run the home and raise the girls.
