Plot summary
Kate teaches American history in Canada, where she lives with her fiancé Charlie, a doctor. Her fear of flying keeps her from joining him at a medical conference in Paris. Days later Charlie telephones: he has met a French woman named Juliette and will not come home. Kate flies to Paris to bring him back, though she dreads the flight. The passenger beside her is Luc Teyssier, a French thief from a family of vintners, who hides a stolen necklace and an American grape vine among her things to carry them past customs. Inspector Jean-Paul Cardon searches Luc's luggage at the Paris airport. Kate waits in the lobby of Charlie's hotel, and the sight of him with Juliette makes her faint. While she is out, a thief named Bob takes her luggage.

- The film was originally titled Paris Match, a play on the French newsmagazine, but the title changed after Billy Crystal challenged it with the MPAA as too close to his own Paris comedy.
- The lead role of Luc was originally written for Gérard Depardieu, and Kevin Kline accepted the part only when Depardieu turned out not to be available for the film.
- The film later inspired remakes abroad, including the 1998 Hindi film Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha and the 2004 Malayalam film Vettam.
- It turned out to be the last film shot by veteran cinematographer Owen Roizman before his death in 2023.
