Plot summary
Jackie Kallen first learns boxing in a small gym where her father and uncle train. She becomes an assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter, and at a middleweight championship fight her boss starts working with the sports manager Sam LaRocca. Challenged to prove she knows the fight game, she embarrasses LaRocca, who offers to sell her the loser's contract for a dollar. She buys it and finds the fighter addicted to drugs and caught in a self-destructive life. She also watches Luther Shaw, a small-time hood, beat a former middleweight champion, and offers to manage him; he hesitates, then signs. LaRocca's influence keeps Shaw out of any fight in Ohio, and the pair takes to the road.
