Plot summary
In the San Joaquin Valley town of Ithaca, California, most of the young men have gone off to the war, among them Marcus Macauley. His brother Homer is fourteen and hopes to be the fastest and best bicycle telegram messenger the town has ever known. The work brings money home to his widowed mother Katie, his sister Bess and his small brother Ulysses. At the telegraph office, Homer has to keep the telegrapher Willie Grogan awake, using cold water and strong coffee. Marcus writes letters about his life in the service and reminds Homer that he is now the man of the house. Every telegram Homer carries brings wishes, love, pain or news of a death.
