Plot summary
Corrupt detectives frame Los Angeles police officer Frank Dooley for stealing a television set, and he loses his badge. Attorney Norman Kane, whose client threatens to kill him if the man is locked up, admits his failures to the judge and resigns from the law. Both men apply to Guard Dog Security, where Captain Clarence O'Connell runs the agency and supervisor Maggie Cavanaugh assigns them to night duty at a pharmaceutical warehouse. Kane walks into an armed robbery there and calls Dooley, but the thieves overpower them. Berated for the failure, the pair bring their complaint to the company union, where president Michael Carlino refuses to hear Kane's grievance and warns him against returning.

- Harold Ramis first developed the project as a vehicle for Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, and John Carpenter was attached to direct; Carpenter dropped out after Aykroyd stipulated that he would not star unless the script was changed to culminate with a car chase.
- Ramis said the finished film “was not good” and tried to take his name off it, managing to remove his executive producer credit before release; he is still credited as a screenwriter, despite his objections.
- Candy and Tom Hanks were originally cast together, but Hanks dropped out, and Candy recommended Eugene Levy, his costar in Second City Television and Going Berserk, to replace him.
