Rob Reiner

Biography

Rob Reiner was an American filmmaker and actor who started out writing for television on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and became widely known as Michael Stivic on All in the Family, a part that won him two Emmy Awards. He turned to directing with the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and went on to make Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally..., Misery (1990) and A Few Good Men, which drew an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. He took supporting roles in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), The First Wives Club (1996), Primary Colors (1998), Edtv (1999) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment. His awards included three Primetime Emmys, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and the Chaplin Award in 2014.

First role
Reiner, then 19, belonged to an improv group with the actor Larry Bishop. The group opened for Carmen McRae at the Hungry I club in San Francisco.
A change of course
Reiner started out writing for television, joining The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968 and 1969. Steve Martin and Carl Gottlieb were his writing partners there.
Behind the camera
In 1969, Reiner took the director's chair for a one-act play at Los Angeles's Oxford Theatre, and also acted in a second one-act play. Philip Mishkin, a friend of his, wrote both.
Behind the award
Reiner won a posthumous Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for playing business consultant Albert Schnur on The Bear in 2025.
Behind the camera
With journalist Soledad O'Brien, Reiner launched a podcast series called Who Killed JFK? in November 2023. The series ran for ten parts.
Beyond film
Reiner opened the CBS primetime special Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic in December 2023, giving a tribute to Dick Van Dyke and having a conversation with him.
