Plot summary
Frannie Avery is an introverted English professor and writer in New York City. Her student Cornelius meets her at a pub to talk about coursework and argues that John Wayne Gacy might be innocent, suggesting desire was responsible. Heading to the basement bathroom, Frannie comes upon a couple in the dark, where she can just make out the woman's blue fingernails and a 3 of spades tattoo on his wrist. Days later Detective Giovanni Malloy questions her about a killing in the neighborhood, after a severed limb turns up in her garden. His sexual aggressiveness thrills and frightens her.
