Plot summary
Alice Bowman and her husband Peter, an American engineer, live in Tecala, where Quad Carbon has hired him to build a dam. Guerrillas of the Liberation Army of Tecala seize Peter in traffic one morning and march him into the jungle, believing he works on the company's oil pipeline. Luthan Risk sends Terry Thorne, a former British Special Air Service member and an expert in kidnap-and-ransom negotiation, to bargain for his release. Quad Carbon, close to bankruptcy and without kidnapping insurance, cannot cover his fee, and Thorne leaves the country. A local negotiator then takes over Alice's case and presses her to make a good faith payment of $50,000 to the rebels. She agrees, and Thorne returns in time to halt the handover.

- The film is dedicated to Will Gaffney, David Morse's stand-in, who was killed on set when a truck he was in went over a cliff. Morse was away at the time because of a family illness.
- One source for the film was Thomas Hargrove, whom FARC kidnapped and held for ransom in 1994 and who wrote the book Long March to Freedom. Twenty-one years after Proof of Life came out, his son Miles released his own documentary, Miracle Fishing, built from camcorder footage he shot while the family negotiated with FARC for his father's return.
