Plot summary

Carter Webb, twenty-six, writes soft-core screenplays in Los Angeles, and his actress girlfriend Sofia Buñuel has just ended things with him. He leaves town for the Michigan house of his grandmother Phyllis, who may be ill or may be a hypochondriac and needs help keeping the place in order. He can send scripts to his boss electronically and work on a project he has wanted to write since high school. Across the street live the Hardwickes: Sarah, her husband Nelson, teenage Lucy and young Paige. Paige develops a crush on the newcomer, Lucy has boyfriend trouble and hard feelings toward her mother, and Sarah needs a sympathetic listener for something she cannot discuss with her family.
