Biography

Lloyd Bridges was an American actor of film, stage, and television who began as a contract player at Columbia Pictures in 1940 and went on to appear in more than 150 features. Born in San Leandro, California, he started with small uncredited parts before landing roles in films such as Sahara (1943), A Walk in the Sun (1945), and High Noon (1952). On television he became widely known as Mike Nelson in the series Sea Hunt, which ran from 1958 to 1961, and he later starred in his own anthology show and in the western series The Loner. Late in his career he showed a comic streak in parodies, playing an air traffic controller in Airplane! (1980) and appearing in Hot Shots! (1991) and Jane Austen's Mafia! (1998). He was a two-time Emmy Award nominee and was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1994.

A role that slipped away
Gene Roddenberry offered Bridges a starring part on what became Star Trek, but Bridges turned it down, having no desire to work in science fiction. Jeffrey Hunter got the role in the pilot, and William Shatner in the series.
First role
Bridges first appeared on Broadway in 1937, in a short-lived staging of Shakespeare's Othello with Walter Huston and Brian Aherne. He was part of the ensemble.
Behind the award
Bridges earned an Emmy nomination in 1998 for playing Izzy Mandelbaum on Seinfeld, which came four decades after his first Emmy nomination.
