Plot summary
In 1876 the Comanches under Black Cloud are the only tribe still at war; the rest have made peace. Black Cloud's band wipes out a town, leaving burnt ruins, and only six soldiers are left alive. They head into the desert for the nearest fort, Fort Macklin, which is at least a hundred miles away, and their water is running out. Travelers from a stagecoach join them in the desert, and at a deserted mission they find a limited supply of water. Black Cloud's warriors pin them down there, and the soldiers and the travelers have to defend the mission.
