Plot summary
Yellow Wolf, a Cheyenne chief, brings his son Little Wolf on foot to the town of Sand Creek, since the tribe's destitute village has too few horses to spare. Yellow Wolf asks Capt. George of the Cavalry for winter clothing and offers recently found gold if his people may stay on their Black Hills land. George has orders to move the Cheyenne to an Oklahoma reservation; he agrees to the trade and then has Garvin shoot the chief in the street. Marshal Tate loves Pretty Willow, Yellow Wolf's daughter, and warns George that Little Wolf may bring warriors seeking revenge. The town demands Tate's badge, and Amy Porter, the widowed boardinghouse owner who looks after his nephew Billy, wants Tate for herself.
