Plot summary
After the Civil War, homesteaders move into Kansas, and their arrival clashes with the cattlemen who settled the region earlier. Abilene is a cattle town on the edge of armed conflict, and its marshal, Dan Mitchell, works to hold the peace between the two camps. For years the main street has been split, with the cattlemen and their cowboys at one end and the townspeople at the other. Mitchell has liked that arrangement, which prevents confrontations. Homesteaders staking claims on the edge of town break the balance. They follow Henry Deiser, a sensible young man, while the county sheriff, Bravo Trimble, prefers cards to unrest. Mitchell's private life is divided as well, between Rita, a showgirl who works on the drovers' side of the street, and Sherry Balder, whose father keeps a shop on the other side.
