Biography

James Cardwell was an American actor who made more than 20 films in Hollywood during the 1940s and was born in Camden in 1921. He came to the screen as George Sullivan in the Oscar-nominated The Fighting Sullivans (1944), then took roles in the musical Sweet and Low-Down starring Benny Goodman, the wartime drama A Walk in the Sun (1945) and He Walked by Night (1949). Reviewing the Charlie Chan mystery The Shanghai Cobra, the Kentucky New Era judged him a fine actor as the romantic lead. He was largely consigned to B-movies, among them Daughter of the Jungle, later listed in a book of the worst films ever made. In 1950 he toured Australia in the play Harvey with Joe E. Brown, then joined the Colleano Troupe, and made two guest appearances on the television series City Detective. His final part was a small unbilled one in the 1954 monster film Them!, the year he died.
