Plot summary
Mary Spencer dropped out of college with six months to go and married Fred Wilson in 1953. Sixteen years on, the marriage has soured. Fred, a tax consultant, finds liquor stashed in her closet and asks Agnes, the household maid, to watch her. Mary wants an escape from her dull suburban life, so she books a one-way flight to Nassau. On the plane she runs into Flo Harrigan, a college friend from 1953; Flo has been mistress to one married man after another, and is traveling to the Bahamas to join Sam. In a casino Mary meets Franco, a Los Angeles hustler with little money, who takes her for a rich woman and claims to be a journalist.
