Plot summary
In 1856, Logan Stuart runs a freight and pack mule line and a store in the Oregon Territory town of Jacksonville. He agrees to escort Lucy Overmire from Portland back to Jacksonville, and she is engaged to his best friend, George Camrose. The night before they leave, an intruder attacks Logan in his hotel room, and he throws the man out the window. On the trail Logan and Lucy are drawn to each other, and at Ben Dance's homestead he introduces her to his girlfriend, Caroline Marsh. In Jacksonville, Logan tries to keep George away from the poker tables of the gambler Jack Lestrade and advances him money for his debts, while Honey Bragg keeps provoking him into a fight.
