Plot summary
Howard Tyler has brought his wife Judy and their son Tommy from Boston to California, and he cannot find work. He meets Jerry Slocum, a charismatic small-time hood who draws him into crime, paying him to help in robberies at gas stations. Desperate for a job, he agrees to the work. Jerry then plans to seize Donald Miller, the son of a rich man, and to hold him until a large ransom is paid.

The story drew on a 1933 San Jose case in which two men were arrested for kidnapping and murdering Brooke Hart, confessed, and were then lynched by a mob of locals. Fritz Lang's 1936 film Fury was inspired by the same incident.- The Sound of Fury was among the last films Cy Endfield made in the U.S. before the blacklisted writer-director relocated to England. The Film Noir Foundation restored it, and the restoration first aired on Turner Classic Movies on January 25, 2020, introduced by Eddie Muller.
