Halliwell Hobbes
Biography
Halliwell Hobbes was an English actor whose career stretched from the late Victorian stage to American television. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, he was educated at Trinity College there and made his stage debut in 1898 with Frank Benson's company, playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet. In 1908 and 1910 he appeared as Prince Michael in The Prince and the Beggar Maid at the Lyceum in London, and in a 1923 production of Ferenc Molnar's The Swan his Father Hyacinth drew admiring words from the critic Benjamin De Casseres. He returned to Broadway by the mid-1940s, playing Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet and remaining there until late 1955, with credits including And Then There Were None in 1943 and Murder on the Nile. By 1950 he had also moved into American television. He died in 1962.
