Kim Coates
Biography
Born in Saskatoon, Kim Coates is a Canadian and American actor who also produces. A drama elective at the University of Saskatchewan first drew him to theater, and he later joined the Stratford Festival, where he played Macbeth at twenty-eight, the youngest actor to take that title there. His Broadway debut came as Stanley Kowalski in a 1988 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. On screen he moved from The Boy in Blue (1986) to a Hollywood break in The Last Boy Scout (1991). His films include The Client (1994), Waterworld (1995), Black Hawk Down (2001), Silent Hill (2006), and Goon (2011) with its sequel Goon: Last of the Enforcers. He starred as Tig Trager on Sons of Anarchy and as Declan Gardiner on Bad Blood, winning a Canadian Screen Award for the latter. He has also appeared in Prison Break, Van Helsing, Godless, Ghost Wars, and American Primeval.

At 28, Coates became part of the Stratford Festival for its 1985-86 season. There he was the youngest actor ever to take on the title role in Macbeth at the festival.

Behind the award
In 2018 Coates returned to the stage after almost thirty years away, taking the part of Johnny "Rooster" Byron in Outside the March's production of Jez Butterworth's Jerusalem. That principal role earned him a Dora Mavor Moore Award.
Early training
Coates was studying at the University of Saskatchewan when he signed up for a drama class as an elective. Seeing a play there for the first time made him want to become an actor.
First role
Coates made his screen acting debut in The Boy in Blue, a Canadian sports biopic, in 1986. After roles in Canadian TV shows and films, he made his Hollywood debut as a henchman in the 1991 action comedy The Last Boy Scout.
