Plot summary

Mark Sway is eleven and lives in a trailer in Memphis with his mother and his younger brother Ricky. In the woods the boys come upon W. Jerome Clifford, a lawyer for the mob, sitting in his car with a hose running from the exhaust pipe into the car. Mark pulls the hose out. Clifford pulls him inside and shoots himself. Ricky goes catatonic and is hospitalized. Police and the mob both believe Clifford told Mark where a murdered Louisiana senator is buried. Roy Foltrigg, a US Attorney, wants to question the boy.

  • Joel Schumacher did not want a child actor for the role of Mark Sway, looking instead for a real kid with a real accent. Some 6,000 actors auditioned for the role before Brad Renfro was cast.
  • Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress at the 67th Academy Awards and won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 48th British Academy Film Awards.
  • The film spawned a TV series of the same name starring JoBeth Williams and John Heard, while Ossie Davis reprised his role as Judge Harry Roosevelt. The show lasted one season, in 1995 and 1996.
